Frequently Asked Questions

I think I might have a problem with alcohol, and I don't know where to start. What do I do?

It’s not really our place to tell you what to do, but we can tell you what we did. That’s why it can help to talk with others. If you think you might have a problem with alcohol, Alcoholics Anonymous is a place to find answers to some of your questions. Consider attending a face-to-face meeting or joining the chat – it’s anonymous. You can ask your questions there and find out how others dealt with similar questions.

You might also want to check out Our Stories, where some of us have written about our problems with alcohol anonymously. And there are a lot of helpful resources over on the AA Info page that might help too.

How Do I Join?

To Join, just click here to launch Discord – our chat app. It will open a new window and help you create an account. Pick whatever username you want, and start chatting right away.

Is it really anonymous?

Yes. To get started chatting, the chat app will set up your account using an email address, a username, and a password – and that’s it. You can make up whatever username you want, and your email address is only used to login (it is never revealed in chat) – so it stays 100% private. There isn’t even a place in the app for you to provide your first and last name!

We do not have access to the email addresses that chatters use to join, so rest assured that it’ll be safe.

Is it really free?

Yes. We will not ask for a credit card when you join, and there is no trial period.

I downloaded the Discord app and created an account, but I'm not in chat. What do I do now?

After you’ve installed Discord and created your account, click on this Instant Invite to be invited to our Discord Server.

Are these real Alcoholics Anonymous meetings?

Yes. We are an established A.A. group with a group representative that reports to our Intergroup (the A.A. Online Intergroup) . Our intergroup works closely with A.A. World Services to provide alternative meeting formats to fellow A.A. members. See MG-16 – A.A. Guidelines on Accessibility for All Alcoholics from A.A. World Services for more information.

Do you provide proof of meeting attendance?

No, not yet. We are working on this, but right now we do NOT provide proof of meeting attendance in any form at this time, but we are DEFININTELY working on it, so stay tuned…

I am a student nurse or researcher, can I join?

No. Our community is only for people who have a problem with alcohol and have a desire to stop drinking. If this doesn’t describe you, than please do not join.

My friend or spouse is an alcoholic, but I am not. Can I join?

No. Our community is only for people who have a problem with alcohol and have a desire to stop drinking. If this doesn’t describe you, than please do not join.

A great resource for you might be the Al-Anon, which is for the friends and family of alcoholics – please check them out at https://al-anon.org/ .
